How is Immigration Affecting the United States?
by: Jasmine smith
The word immigration definition is "the action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country." To me, this means that people are trying to leave their home country to move somewhere else so that they can provide for their families or to get away from the problems of their home country. The Unites States is a place where a lot of people are choosing to come to. In a lot of people eyes, America is a place where you will have individual freedom. You are able to have a say in our government and you are able to live a life the way you would like to live. It seems that lately there have been problems within the nation that pertain to immigration. One place is North Carolina. Their governor Pat McCrory signed a law that prohibits government officials from accepting certain consulate ID cards to determine identity and bars local governments from approving policies preventing a person from being asked their immigration status. The purpose of him signing this bill is to try and track any illegal immigrants and they also want to be able to keep a valid track of young women who are immigrants and are being forced to be part of human trafficking. Some people who know anyone who is an immigrant from another country was offended because they just want to be in America to live life. I believe the governor should have thought about the repercussions of signing this first because then if he would have outweighed possible outcomes of signing this then he would have possibly not signed it and the six-person protest that went on because of this would not have happened. If he would have considered that it is something that they are trying to do to save young women's lives they are also ruining lives for many families that would be in a whirlwind of problems if they are caught living in America illegally. In my opinion, I believe that McCrory should just allow immigrants to come and live in North Carolina with ease. They are people that also help to make up many different industries that have hard workers. They come over to America searching for jobs and a better place to raise their families but when they are being kicked out of the area they are living in then we lose the hard-working people that help us have so many of the products and things that are made in the United States. I also feel that he should allow them to come to North Carolina because if that is the first state that stops allowing people to come into North Carolina then there will be mass groups of people that go to other states and then all those people will start to crowd up in certain states because if one state does not have to allow immigrants then another won't and then there will be too many states with no immigrants.

Do the Short Comings of Our State Legislature Have to affect our Voting privileges?
by: issac boateng
The state of Alabama is going through a serious budget problem that has made them have to consider many efforts in order to try to improve Alabama’s economy in the recent month. Past issues such as when in 2010 Bob, the former governor of Alabama, had borrowed 160 million from the state rainy day fund in order to prevent general agency cuts. This issue has become reoccurring in many of the ideas that come up for improving the economy. One issue that Alabama is facing now is the recent shutdown of many rural area DMVs. The shutdown of many of the rural area affects many of the citizen’s ability to vote. The idea that the removal of DMVs in order to help increase the economy is a bad idea. I feel that the state legislature in Alabama should rethink/repurpose other ideas that can help improve the economy. The removal of rural area DMVs deprives many people of their right to vote. This is because of the fact that during elections the most common form of identification is your driver’s licenses. According to al.com, around 250,000 registered voters in Alabama do not have the correct type of identification for the voting ballots. This is because many people won’t be able to get a driver’s license and they won’t be able to get a state identification card which are provided for you at DMVs. I think that state legislature should increase taxes or they should include benefits in tax forms. This would increase the amount of money that the state is getting. Reduce the amount of projects that don’t support job grow in the area. Setting priorities on different things that need to be improved in different communities. If the state of Alabama wants to improve its economy, supporting job growth is one of the only ways they can do that. Taking away people’s ability vote does not.

Florida executes man convicted of fatally stabbing ex-wife, daughter
by: ravyn Ramsey
We have just been informed that Jerry Correll, 59, a Florida man has been executed thirty years after executing his wife, daughter, and other in-laws. Seeing that this execution was long overdue, he wasn’t even scheduled for it until February. A court put that on hold after his Florida attorneys and other attorneys that are at the US Supreme Court involved in a separate case in Oklahoma, were arguing over the fact that whether or not using a sedative would fully kill Correll. This sedative, being used frequently in Florida along with two other drugs used as far as executions are concerned. After sending his case back to a court in Orlando to determine whether the sedative would work, medical experts had informed the judge that Correll’s execution could take place. The Florida Supreme Court had also rejected all of the arguments that Correll living on death row was basically cruel and unusual punishment. We think that it’s fair on what happened to Correll because if he is taking someone’s life, matter of fact, multiple lives, then there is no reason why he should get fair treatment while waiting to get executed. Correll’s lawyers had also wanted to postpone the execution feeling that the Judges is power received too much power in deciding whether or not the death penalty should be used in sentences on certain criminals. Seeing that his lawyers thought that they were going to get the date pushed back, we didn’t think that the court would do it because of the fact that it didn’t need to be pushed back when it was still the same consequence. The court rejected the appeal leaving the execution still in effect. Correll was found guilty and was sentenced to death for each of the slayings in Orlando, Florida. The jury convicted him of killing his former wife, their five-year-old daughter, former mother-in-law, and his former sister-in-law who all died from massive bleeding in their stab wounds. Their bodies were found in his former mother-in-law’s home in July of 1985. On the day of his execution, Correll had a cheeseburger, French fries, and a Coca-Cola as his final meal. A spokesman for the Florida Department of Corrections, Mckinley Lewis said that Correll was “calm and in good spirits” before going to his execution. He even spoke with his surviving daughter on the telephone. As he was strapped to the gurney, he did not have and final statement. His upper body was convulsing for just about ten seconds when the lethal injection was inserted in to his body at 7:27 p.m. His body then stopped moving, his eyes were fluttering, then finally, his mouth opened. He pronounced dead nine minutes later at 7:36 p.m. Jerry Correll was executed on October 29, 2015. We feel that yes, a severe punishment was in order, but was death needed or could we have taken a different route in to making sure that Correll got his punishment for what he has done.
